Meet the Doctor

Dr. Dan Nelson

Dr. Nelson is a Huntington Beach Chiropractor that specializes in the Upper Cervical spine, a technique which focuses on the cause of health neurological and spinal bio-mechanic abnormalities.

In His 20’s he suffered a trauma that caused 2 herniated discs in his lower spine. Through chiropractic he was able to avoid medical intervention. By following the principles of Chiropractic and Fitness he has continued to live without limitations in any area of his health. It was during this time that he established his desire to help others through chiropractic.

He graduated in just 4 years from Idaho State University with his BS in Biology with a focus in Neurology. He went on to receive his Doctorate in Chiropractic shortly after this time at Southern University of Health Sciences Los Angeles Area. Although He personally received life changing results with Chiropractic care, he learned his focus would be in Upper Cervical care after receiving his first adjustment after other techniques failed to correct his problem. He has continued his dedication for over 16 years specializing, analyzing, and correcting spinal and neurological abnormalities.

Chiropractic Care

Studies also show that people who regularly visit a chiropractor have improvement in biomechanical, musculoskeletal and nervous system integrity. This in turn will aid in the body’s ability to deal with the stressors that increase with age...

What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic

The UC chiropractic technique is a specific system of analyzing and adjusting the upper cervical vertebrae (Upper neck) of the spinal column.

Misalignment of upper cervical vertebrae can cause interference with the communication of the brain stem and spinal cord and this communication interference can disrupt the health of the spine and nervous system.

Special attention is given to the first two cervical vertebrae, the atlas and axis, as they are the most freely moveable vertebrae in the spinal column and the ones most commonly misaligned. These two bones and their proximity to vital systems of the brain stem (which is a conduit to almost every single function of our body) is the most essential part for the health of our nervous system.

If there is any interference around the brain stem, the brain and body cannot communicate and heal, which is when disease and symptoms start occurring in the body. Your nervous system is composed of the brain, the spinal cord, cranial nerves and associated spinal nerves.

The nerve system is the super highway upon which information travels between the brain and the body. These messages tell each and every cell in your body what to do and when to do it. Every second billions of chemical reactions are controlled and monitored in the body though the nerve system. Whether it be a conditioned (acquired over time) or direct traumas can result in the displacement of the top bone in the neck, called the ATLAS, resulting in interference to normal transmission of information from the brain to the body. The Upper Cervical Technique re-aligns these vertebrae and corrects this interference to the nervous.

The Upper Cervical Technique does not Twist, crack, or pull on the neck. All the adjustments are very light, precise, and designed specifically for that patient.  Each neck adjustment can hold from weeks, to months, to years. The purpose of the Upper Chiropractic technique is not to diagnose or treat diseases or conditions, but to analyze and correct vertebral subluxations in an accurate, precise adjustment to help the body repair and maintain health from within.

Personal Training

If you are a beginning or an advanced athlete, we will design a program to your specific needs. We offer both group-training and individual packages suited to your health goals.

Training Goals

Balance & Proprioception
As we age we lose the ability to maintain balance, Proprioception is a part of the nervous system that helps us respond to position and change. By this training we can improve the reaction time it takes to make balance changes, thus increasing our ability to maintain our balance and reaction to positional changes.
Strength
Applies to the exertion of force withstanding of strain. Weight training is a common type of strength training for developing the strength and size of skeletal muscles.
Body Composition
Reducing fat and increasing fat-free mass (muscle), This aids in metabolism and improves overall health with changes in body composition and physical appearance resistance to handle body weight, project and implement, move or resist movement of another object, or resist gravity and optimize ground reaction force.
Core Strength & Stability
Exercise that will develop support for the spinal column and core musculature.
Cardiovascular Health & Conditioning
Exercises designed to improve cardiovascular health.

Manual Therapy

See the types of Manual Therapy we have in offer

Types of Manual Therapy

Trigger point therapy
Trigger point therapy, often referred to as myofascial release or pressure point massage, involves the application of gentle yet firm pressure to specific areas along the body, known as pressure or trigger points.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Muscle Spasm
One of the most common reasons for a Chiropractic visit includes muscles strain (spasm). Patients sometimes rely on rest to relieve the pain associated with a muscle spasm, it is likely that the pain will return without the help of Chiropractic. However the actual injury is most often caused by a restricted joint. With Upper Cervical Chiropractic technique will align the body bio-mechanics improving muscle and joint movement decreasing the healing time.
Soft Tissue Mobilization
This technique is used by the Doctor to break up fibrous muscle tissue. Utilizing deep pressure movements and targeted stretching.
Therapeutic exercise
The goal of any exercise program is to leave you feeling healthier and stronger than when you began. Therapeutic exercise has similar goals, but incorporates a wide range of activities that help you improve and or maintain your strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, or stability. Whether you have been injured, experienced an illness, or are simply noticing you are simply just losing your physical ability, therapeutic exercise can improve body conditioning and prevent disability. Therapeutic exercise can be performed as a part of a treatment plan.
Therapeutic massage
One type of passive treatment we offer is massage therapy. A massage therapist trained in therapeutic massage (massage therapy could potentially be covered by your health insurance)? Techniques include deep tissue, Swedish, or even pressure point massage:
  • Deep tissue is beneficial to athletes and anyone who needs to relieve tension in their deep musculature
  • Swedish massage is more gentle and targets more superficial tissues, perfect for anyone looking to relax and relieve mental as well as physical stress
  • Pressure point massage is effective for relieving tender points within the body’s fascial tissue.
Everyone from young toddlers to seniors can benefit from massage therapy. This technique offers a variety of benefits that’s truly safe for just about anyone. Specific benefits of therapeutic massage include:
  • Decreases or eliminate stress
  • Improved circulation
  • Accelerates healing
  • Reduces swelling and inflammation
  • Improves range of motion
  • Dectrease pain
  • Reduce adhesions and scar tissue formation
Therapeutic massage helps people manage and or recover from a wide range of conditions, including fibromyalgia, back and neck pain, arthritis, sports and auto-accident related injuries, patients with psychological disorders including anxiety and depression have also benefited from massage.
Cardiovascular Health & Conditioning
Exercises designed to improve cardiovascular health.
Vibration Therapy

Rapid Release Vibration therapy improves the body’s overall performance. It has also been shown in university studies to breakdown scar tissue from within the body from an initial injury or that of a constant repetitive stress injury.

I’ve heard of trigger point therapy before. What is it?

The manual pressure provided by your doctor during trigger point therapy is intended to relax and reduce trigger points within the fascia, a widespread, sheath-like, fibrous tissue encasing your musculoskeletal structures. Fascia, which is normally pliant and flexible, is important for protecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and nerves and helps them move together in a coordinated way. However, when stress, injury, poor posture, repetitive movement, or poor nutrition or hydration is imposed on the body, the fascia can become inelastic and stiff. This restricts the normal movement of the connective tissues beneath, leading to pain, immobility, and even an increased risk of injury. Trigger point therapy is intended to release the tension and stress in the fascia and other structures within targeted treatment areas, thus possibly restoring normal movement, relieving pain, and reducing your risk of further tissue damage.
What conditions may benefit from myofascial release?

Fascial tissue is located throughout your body, so adhesions and activated trigger points anywhere within this tissue can affect a wide number of physiological systems and structures.
Myofascial release has shown to be effective for numerous conditions, including:

  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Medial and lateral epicondylitis
    (golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow)
  • Whiplash
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder tendonitis
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
